"GPK - Grenzplankostenrechnung (grenz-plan-kost-en-rech-nung)

What is it? What does it offer?  Why is IMA pursuing it?"

Present by

Paul Sharman

President and CEO of the Institute of Management Accountants

bulletEmbassy Suites Hotel

for April's Tech Session

Paul Sharman, ACMA, is President and CEO of IMA. He has over thirty years of management accounting and consulting experience in cost and performance management. He is concerned that Activity Based Costing, while theoretically sound, leaves much to desire in practice. He set out to identify critical concerns and ways in which to improve corporate understanding of organization performance. His search led him to Germany where German society considers controllership to be more important than any other accounting or finance function. Over the last 60 years, German management accountants and academics have collaborated with consultants, SAP, and corporations to develop Grenzplankostenrechnung or GPK, which loosely translates as “Standard Marginal Costing” and the more recent Prozesscostenrechnung.

Paul will describe what caused him to set out on his journey, what he learned along the way, and why it is relevant to IMA members. He places the discussion in the context of the marketing hype of audit firms and issues of control and governance failure. While Americans have been frustrated with lack of actionable information Germans have been applying what they learned from Americans 50 years ago. Paul Sharman describes what the IMA is doing to bring that success back to America.

Concise Bio:

Mr. Sharman is responsible for leading and directing IMA’s operations and initiatives in the United States and abroad. Mr. Sharman’s vision for advancing the managerial accounting and finance profession through certification and superior professional ethical standards will ultimately result in a significant group of professionals qualified to build quality financial and governance practices into their organizations.

Prior to his current position as CEO, Paul served as IMA’s Interim Executive Director. He believes the strength of IMA’s chapters and councils is essential to rebuilding the IMA community, the management accounting profession, and restoring good governance to our public, private, government, and nonprofit organizations. Chapter visitations such as this are an important aspect of rebuilding the IMA foundation and Silicon Valley chapter is pleased to host this key leader of our organization.
